in 2013 I’d like to

I’ll admit to having high hopes for this coming year…mainly because the past two years have been an utter crapfest. Please let the streak end already, universe, okay?

These are not resolutions or goals or anything so strict as that but rather a bunch a things I hope will be accomplished or will occur this coming year.

*New table for the entry way, move all mail processing to that table and off the bar/buffet thing, including the paper recycling. Get cute bin for the paper recycling and move boots out there plus shoe basket for by the door.

*Paint entry way area a different color.

*New rug for the living room. Already picked out, just go to Ikea and get it already.

*Paint guest bathroom a different color

*Rip out the last of the nasty carpet in our bathroom. Build a vanity solution ourselves since there is no such thing as a stupid L-shaped vanity in normal society anymore (UGH HATE) tile the floor (GET THE BLASTED TILE OUT OF THE GARAGE FINALLY) and paint the walls.

*Continue my acts of kindness. Once a month (at least) on or around my birthday day (so the 14th) do something kind for someone, anyone, to promote good.

*Meal plan, shop accordingly and maybe hate cooking dinner a little less? I hate cooking dinner. HATE COOKING DINNER so much right now, maybe this will help. Also have family meeting to get boy input on what they would like to see on the menu. Cook from cookbooks at least once a week.

*Travel more. This is always on my list, will always be on my list, I am a happier person when I am going elsewhere. Fact. But I’d like to add “travel with FRIENDS” this year. I miss people. Simple truth.

*Camp. The weather was utter shit last year (and the year before) and I really would love to just go commune with nature a bit and if we could do it with a group? All the better.

*Get back to yoga. I need it.

*Start the weight training my PT wanted me to do months ago. I am all out of whack again and I really need to address it before I need to start paying $90 a visit to get him to put me back right again.

*Have a game night with friends.

*Get out more. I have been a hermit due to the years of suck and it showing in my general stress level around the general public.

*Related: date nights with my husband, more time with friends and loved ones.

*Related (and via Twitter last night): beach house/lake house/hill country house rental with friends, play Cards Against Humanity

*Get at least one tattoo…more if I can.

*Work on the photo business/my skillset. My business is off to a bit of a slow start and it’s easy to get defeated so…I really need to just buck up and keep putting myself out there, trying harder, improving myself.

*Get a new car. My car, she is old and giving us LOTS OF TROUBLE and I’m OVER IT. We need to have that money pit behind us. As soon as the bills/husband’s car/money situation allows, we are getting it handled.

*Purge, organize, streamline, live with less. We need to pare down the junk in this house. I can’t take the clutter. CAN’T.

*Get a guest bed solution/room/office situation sorted so people could visit and stay here if they wanted.

*Overhaul my wardrobe. I did the “wear your shit” last year and now I have a good idea what I have that I love and what I have that I hate and what I have that I don’t even touch. Now it’s time to get rid of stuff and buy only stuff that I KNOW I love. I also have identified what “gets me” so it’s easier to buy things right the first time.

*See Sprog graduate. This one TUGS AT MY HEART, Y’ALL. MY BABY is going to TURN 18. HE’S GOING TO GET HIS DIPLOMA. HE’S GOING TO BE DONE WITH HIGH SCHOOL. I SOB.

*deep breath*

Are you ever so afraid of doing something that it makes your stomach just twist on itself and give you CRAZY anxiety, so you just force yourself through it to get it over with so that it’s not hanging over you anymore consuming your every thought and creative process and at the very least you can say that you tried? You tried and you got it over with? YOU DID IT! At least?

This is that thing and today? Today is that day.

Willy and I (mostly Willy) have been working on creating my photography website for a long time. I’ve been asking a lot of people a lot of questions, doing research, culling photos, tweaking incessantly. I’ve second shot a wedding (thank you Natalie for the amazing opportunity!). I’ve done a weekend photographing my BFF’s son, his second birthday party and put together a photo album for them (you’ve heard that story already). I’ve ordered business cards. I’ve sent a preview and made tweaks according to feedback. I have a wedding slated (for friends) in 2013. Things, in the background, are moving right along. I just need to put the final piece out there and go with it already.

So without further hemming and hawing.

Just Expressive Photography

I ordered two packs of business cards

One to show a small portfolio

and one to match the site (although my iPhone flat refuses to capture the yellow properly)

And now maybe I can start to breathe again.

wanting wednesdays

Tucker for Target

The new designer line for Target is out and it’s lovely! It’s super feminine and vintage inspired and I am totally smitten.

Want!
I totally love this trench

Want
and this dress (the picture doesn’t do it justice at all)

Want
and this orange herringbone skirt

Is it just me or is the Target clothes photography sucking balls lately? I mean it’s super small, isn’t super flattering and if I hadn’t seen this stuff in the store, I wouldn’t be into it at all. Trust me though it’s super gorgeous and totally drool worthy.

I also totally want the Michael Kors Peacoat that is at Costco right now. COSTCO! I can’t wrap my brain around how that is possible but it’s actually true.

In other news, there is a link up in the top bar now directly to my Etsy shop for anyone that is interested. I added a new item on Monday and plan on having some Halloween themed items shortly. If there is anything specific you are interested in (color combinations, embellishments) that you haven’t seen yet, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

wanting wednesdays

Today’s feature isn’t going to be a thing or things at all but is going to be about a dream, a dream of mine to be able to host my own Thanksgiving. My in-laws aren’t known for being adventurous either in eating or in changing routine, every year the Thanksgiving meal is exactly the same as it’s been every year before and I am soooo not that way. I salivate over new recipes and dream of fancy tablescapes.

For me, Thanksgiving isn’t about the turkey at all (gag, I really can’t stand turkey) but about all the glorious sides and desserts.

A Thanksgiving Menu if I had my way

Herb Crusted Pork Tenderloin (I am seriously addicted to this stuff)
Parsnip Bread Pudding (new recipe I want to try)
Cornbread Stuffing
Vidalia Onion Gratin
Balsamic Roasted Brussel Sprouts
Pea Salad
Country Style Green Beans (little bundles wrapped in bacon)
Sage Butter Sweet Potatoes
Flaky Dinner Rolls

Cherry Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Dulce de Leche Cheesecake
Some sort of Trifle

What would be on your dream Thanksgiving menu?

hair today, gone tomorrow?

It’s hot here, I know I have complained about it before, but it’s oppressive, overwhelming and pervasive. The heat is all you can think about. You dread going out doors. You are envious of anyone’s pictures or status updates that are outside and the least bit pleasant. You dream of vacations. You eye your suitcases and mentally pack entire wardrobes. You DEMAND to be taken to Portland, OR for Voodoo Donuts THIS INSTANT. You begin to once again hate the full mane of hair that sits upon your head.

You start looking at this picture

possible hair?

and consider lopping it all off again. But you hesitate because last time, the tears, oh heavens, the tears.

Hair is such an issue, isn’t it?

But the heat! It’s so hot. As Yosemite Sam would say, my biscuits are burnin, fire in the hole.

wanting wednesdays

We begin today with the Kate Spade purse I mentioned in Willy’s b-day post yesterday. I have loved Kate Spade since I first heard of her some time ago although not for any specific handbag. I always loved her simple sophistication and knew that one day I would fall in love with one of her pieces. Every so often, I check her collection to see if it’s time yet. I am that patient when I “know something” which sounds kinda odd but it’s just how I can be. When Em and I walked into Macy’s the other day, it was time.

Wanting Wednesdays

Wanting Wednesdays

This purse is in her new collection and it makes me swoon a little. It reminds me of Alice in Wonderland with the black and white striped outside and the green polka dotted interior. It’s very me, classy but a little twisted on the inside :) I have never spent so much money on a purse in my life but then again, that one is classic and won’t be going out of style any time soon. I could (and would) carry it with most anything. The sticker shock may yet talk me out of it but it’s so pretty, I want to pet it.

Now, after that and the fact that I would love nothing more than to go clothes and shoe shopping for myself (damn you flickr groups! damn you!) I am going to make up for it by posting some gift ideas for the rest of wanting wednesday today.

I’ll post more about every other Wednesday or so and in the meantime if you come across some that you’d like to recommend, please shoot them to me! Please keep in mind that when shopping anything indie you need to do it soon. They don’t have the stock of the big chain stores and will sell out more quickly.

Next week, bath and body products!

the internets want my monies

Every day it seems I find new and beautiful things that make me want to hand over the bank card. When I tout Etsy and buying handmade, it’s not blog fodder, I really do buy things from there. I want more things from there all the time. In addition, I have begun trolling Ebay and other various points on the web.

I have been saving up for a tattoo. I have been waiting for quite a while for this next round of ink and I finally have enough saved up at work to do it. Today I sat there looking at my accumulated points monies and thought that maybe I should put it towards our trip for next year instead of my tattoo. That even though I have been waiting and really want the ink, travel is really important to me.

Then I get on the web for my afternoon of devouring design blogs and within seconds, I am ready to give up the tattoo and the trip for the things I find. This is why I don’t have an Etsy account or an Ebay account. If it’s something I really have to have, I get the husband to get it for me. This chain of ordering makes it harder for me to just blow everything I have at once.

So today I am drooling for:

There are more and I could go on all day but my carpal tunnel is acting up from being on the Powerbook too much and I need to take the boys to Youth Group (also known as hanging out with the giant ass plasma tv and playing games, church is so not about church with that kind of stuff around).

buying handmade

I am a huge fan of Etsy. There are scores of gorgeous handmade things available on that site. It can be overwhelming to find things out there easily; fortunately, folks like Cuteable or Design*Sponge (links over on the blogroll) make it easy and pick out great things on a regular basis.

Here are a few of my fave Etsy things:

I love the idea of owning something few other people own. I love being able to do that while supporting other crazy artist type people. I envy their niche. I wish I was a master of one instead of a dabbler in some. I highly recommend you to spend some time browsing my blogroll or Etsy in general and see what is out there. Such beautiful things await you.

diy

So I think I should be a DIY consultant or something. Everyone at work comes to ask me decorating and painting questions and several people have asked (probably jokingly) me to come do their houses. So here’s what I’m thinking.

If there is an area of your house that you don’t know what to do with or an area that you just want some ideas of what to do, comment and let me know. Include pictures and needs. I’ll toss out some ideas and see if any of them resonate with you.

I love coming up with ideas for spaces, it’s fun to be creative.
