the weekend in pictures

First a brief thank you for the support I received yesterday, here and on twitter, life goes on and all that but it’s nice to have all the same.

As an antidote to the morose of yesterday, here are some snaps from how we spent our weekend.

Friday we went to the restaurant were we had our first date and not only had a tasty dinner but also some giant slices of cake.

Saturday after the shit news we went to Chuy’s and had some medically necessary margaritas

And I don’t know about y’all but when I’m stressed, I shop so I threw #wys right out the window and went summer clothes shopping while day drunk
Untitled
obviously Elizabeth’s uniform was fresh on my mind as I bought a navy blue shirt and orange shorts.

I also bought some new summer skirts, shortish ones (it’s already not getting below 75 at night, this summer is going to SUCK BALLS) and I wore one to breakfast that I forced the sleepy hubs to take me to the next day
Untitled

For dinner that night I made homemade garlic croutons from some homemade bread to go on some spinach salad and lo, it was good

I also played around with the camera in the backyard again while the husband worked on the fence.

#WYS what week is this again?

I had a whirlwind trip out of town over the weekend. A busy weekend once out of town. Slammed days since being back and some out of control drama to deal with. Yesterday I had no idea what day it was until the trash men showed up (our trash and recycling wasn’t out, obvs) and even then I didn’t believe it until I checked the calendar.

So..here is last week’s rather belated and admittedly half-assed #wys

These jeans are rapidly becoming one of my favorite things. You will see them again and again.

Friday was the day I was on the plane so no actual time for a full outfit shot. These two parts will have to do. I got a ton of compliments on my dress.

(also, see what I mean about the white jeans? LOVE THEM)

WYS week 4

This week was a lot of fun for me in “wear yo shit” land and I feel that I really hit my stride. I actually pre-planned (and got excited about) my outfits and even though I totally forgot to photograph one whole day (thanks for the migraines Houston) I still have had plenty to share.

I should point out that our weather has been unseasonably warm and we have moved from “Fall-ish” right into “Spring” so 70 to 80 degrees this week.

I liked this outfit so much, that I later played around with a nighttime look for it

I dare you to not want a pair of pumpkin colored pants for yourself!

This outfit lasted about 10 minutes before I found out that my poor husband who had been working since 4 am was going to have to continue working and my Saturday was going to be reduced to taking Sprog to the mall, so I changed it to something a bit more casual

This week I wore two things that I had never worn. I wore two things that were many years old and hadn’t been worn in several years. I came up with a couple of looks for the same core items (white pants, olive cargos) and wore what I considered to be “work pants” (the pumpkin pants) in a casual manner to give me more use out of them.

VERY SUCCESSFUL WEEK!

Are you still playing along? Have you had any successes?

WYS week 3 and random other things

So for week three, I did a bit better. I broke out of my jeans and actually wore some dresses/skirts. I found even more clothes I could get rid of and I’m sure there’s still more lurking in there that can be done away with or accessorized differently.

I’ve also even “done” my hair a couple of times (as seen above in the jeans/white cardigan outfit) or when I used a vintage button in my pony tail instead of just a plain old pony tail. Most every day I try to do something. Of course there are days where I give up all together and throw on my husband’s Cocky T-shirt (with a pic of a Rooster on it, of course) and call it done.

In other news, I played around in the yard with my camera again doing the whole DIY macro technique and fell in love with some dandelion pics I caught

Inside out

The first pic I am turning into a custom iPhone case for myself and the second one I had blown up to 20×30 and printed at mpix.com and am framing for the living room. I already have the print and the frame for it (frames were 40% off at Michael’s and I had a 25% off coupon which meant I got the frame for less than half the original cost) and am just waiting for my custom acid free mat to come in (even with the cost of the mat, I’m still under the original cost of the frame). My phone case is supposed to arrive today, I am super excited to receive it.

WYS week 2

We’re going to call this week a wash.

It’s rained or been foggy every other day this week which means I’ve had a headache EVERY day this week and as such, I’ve worn jeans and tennis shoes with my hair in some state of disaster pretty much every day. I did get dressed for Valentine’s day…in an outfit I’ve worn before

with these shoes

11/12/07 Red

and today I had a lovely breakfast with A’Dell so I sorta dressed for that.

(the best part of that outfit being my Great-Grandmother’s ring, of course)

but the reason I am not willing to call the whole week a fail is because I went through part of my closet and there is a HUGE pile of clothes ready to be carted off and donated, which was EASY. I also tried on some things and even though I LOVE them I was able to admit that they don’t fit they way they should (stupid broad shoulders) and that I need to just part with them already and they are going as well.

So I am still following through with my #WYS mission.

How are y’all doing? Are you wearing yo shit?

my february (and beyond) project

Jennie and Kristie are both doing “no shopping” project for the month of February. And of course Christina is doing her own large scale version of the “no shopping” thing and has been since last year.

Since I stay at home and have a teenager that eats ALL THE THINGS, I’ve already given up a lot when it comes to personal spending, just to keep us on budget from month to month. I’ve also purchased things like a Keurig which helps me save money by staying out of Starbucks as much as humanly possible.

When I recently went to Austin to have dinner with a bunch of awesome bloggers and hang out with some amazing little girls in a backyard/house I covet so hard, I decided that I was going to bring something from my closet that I haven’t worn and lo an idea was born.

I have probably 10 (if not more) items in my closet that have never been worn. I tend to get into a jeans + top + converse or TOMS rut when I’m not doing anything special and so there are things in my closet with tags on. There are also things in my closet that could be worn with my jeans + top (like CUTE SHOES) uniform and yet, I always grab for one of two pairs of chucks or my TOMS.

So I’ve decided to launch Project Wearyoshit.

I’m tackling re-organizing our closet so I can get a good idea what exactly I have, washing ALL THE LAUNDRY and getting rid of things that need to go. I’m also forcing myself to reach for a different pair of shoes or put on a dress instead of jeans or hell even dig out a different pair of jeans instead of my 3 favorite pairs. I am determined to stop wearing the same 5 outfits (interchangeable v-neck shirts + jeans + aforementioned shoe choice) all the time.

Yesterday I pulled on some jeans that I have maybe worn twice since I bought them several years ago, a cardigan that I have only worn once and my pumas from NYC when I was there with Kristie. I’ve asked for advice on Style Lush about a skirt I’m a little afraid of and will probably be taking things in to get them tailored or reworked into different items (I have a clearance dress I bought for $3 dollars because I LOVED the fabric and I want it made into a skirt instead) so there will probably be future posts involving those sorts of dilemmas/results.

I’m positive that I won’t stop shopping completely, because I feel that my shopping is already super low (for me) but I want to get more use out of what I have first and get rid of what is just adding clutter….which in the end will yield a similar result, I think.

I have a WYS (formerly known as the vanity resolution) flickrpool which will probably only get love on the days I actually get dressed and leave the house longer than to fetch Sprog from school but it’s there to help me see what my comfort zones are and try to break them.

day of the dead

If you follow me on twitter or FB, you’ve already seen our costumes for this year but allow me to elaborate on what we did and how we did it a little bit.

First, let’s talk about Sprog.

Deadmau5 costume

Sprog was Deadmau5 for Halloween. Originally he was going to be the LMFAO robot dude from their videos but he changed his mind and opted for this instead. He and Willy made the head from scratch following a tutorial they found on the internet and I’ll have you know that’s a 13 inch hamster ball my child’s head is inside. Of course it’s a bunch of other crap too and I got involved as well (some Just Expressive materials were sacrificed to make the mouth) but for the greatest majority of it, it was all them. I am so happy it turned out so well. They did an awesome job!!

Deadmau5 texting his new girl

He spent a lot of time during the night doing this (he has yet ANOTHER new girlfriend. holy gods) but he also mounted headphones inside the head facing out so he played music and swayed along as he was walking too. Pretty cool.

Willy and I originally planned to be something else but as crap kept going wrong around here, I had to scrap our original plan and then had no idea what we were going to do. Ever since going to Austin for The Blathering, I have been obsessed with The Day Of The Dead folks I saw on 6th that night and decided that somehow I was going to incorporate it into this weekend. I originally thought I would do it for Ren Fest on Sunday but scrapped that plan in favor of Wills and I being a DotD Bride and Groom for Halloween

Bride and Groom

Everything except for the make-up and the colored flowers was already owned or borrowed (we had to ask mom for the ribbon for his skinny tie) All of my outfit is stuff I already had, including the white flowered headpiece which came from Ren Fest 13 years ago. I bought 3 dollars worth of flowers at the 99 cent store and hot glued them onto it.

The make-up is where I really invested the most time and thought. As you can see in Willy’s (above) I went very simple and masculine. I also did it on the fly with no pre-planning when he got home from work. I watched one tutorial for male DotD make-up and that’s where the idea for the top part came from (even though mine is a bit different) but other than that it was all about what I could get done really quickly AND what happened when he moved while I was putting it on his face.

Make-up close up

My make-up I actually did a trial run for but the boys thought the first white stick I bought wasn’t white enough (I wasn’t even going to bother with grease paint given how easily I break out so everything I have on is “real” make-up) so I ran to Ulta and was able to get one I saw recommended in several other tutorials. Otherwise it looks completely different than what I did the first time I played around. One tutorial I saw used a rose stencil on her face which gave me the idea to use lace. That’s what is at my forehead and chin area and I love how it turned out. Other than the lace, everything else was done free-hand and is a combination of eye-shadow, eye-liner, liquid eye-liner and gel eye-liner.

When we got to my mom’s house, people thought we were zombies? I dunno. So everyone was talking and in a big uproar about it and some dude whipped out his iPad and made me take a picture. Later another dude snagged a pic from his from yard. Sprog was THRILLED that people knew who he was. I also totally made a wee child burst in to screamy tears pointing at me even though I saw it coming and tried to turn around before it happened.

We were running super late getting to mom’s so we didn’t have time to stop for food. We ended up running to Schlotsky’s after trick or treating (fave Halloween house let us down for the second year in a row, MAJOR BUMMER) but then had to rush off to take a key to some friends that had locked themselves out of their house. Once home? That’s when the real trick happened. My husband inadvertently locked our black lab in the office. So she retaliated by pissing and shitting on the floor, trying to break into the iguana’s cage (thank god the dog is currently in a cone of shame or very bad things would’ve happened there) and generally destroying everything in her path. She then proceeded to walk through fresh shit in the yard and TRACK IT ALL OVER my newly mopped kitchen and laminate floors. I was cleaning up shit for almost 2 hours after we got home last night. Not happy making, not happy making AT ALL. And it’s like, I would think that I got every fucking paw print and yet another one would suddenly appear. PHANTOM PAW PRINTS OF SHIT all over my house. I don’t even know how she could get them everywhere that she did.

I would like a Halloween do over please. It’s the ONE HOLIDAY I wait for every year!

in defense of the maxi dress

I spend a lot of time on twitter. A LOT of time on twitter. It’s like my life-line to the outside world. People on twitter are very opinionated about a wide range of topics, did you know? It’s not shocking, people in general are opinionated and it’s an easy forum to dump your thoughts on the masses at large, I do it too. (Hello all my thoughts on the HORRIBLE HOUSEWIVES THIS SEASON) Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of hate for the maxi dress rolling around and well, I just can’t get on board. I don’t care if you think they are essentially empire-waist mumus. I don’t care if you think they make everyone look pregnant. I DON’T CARE because this shit

IS COMFORTABLE. I was able to sit outside for HOURS without melting into a little puddle of Jess. I felt marginally stylish even.

I did shave my legs still (leg hair is HOT) so that isn’t my reason for wearing them it’s more that I can’t go outside without instantly getting a sunburn and it’s already NINETY FUCKING DEGREES here, so my jeans need to be retired ASAP but since the prednisone nightmare, I am so not even about to bust out shorts and sunscreen. Also, I came home and flopped directly into my bed and it was HEAVEN.

I bought two of the exact same maxi (one pink and one teal) and wore them in the exact same way over the weekend.

Cardi, dress, sandals, huge dangly earrings, pony-tail, sunglasses. I felt cute, put together and COMFORTABLE.

Plus I even tried the maxi with a blouse and belt over it and it looked good, I’ll have to photo that later. I like things that are versatile. I think this is going to be the summer of the dress (also the summer of me DYING OF HEAT OMG) so long or short, dresses are going to be on my person.
